Sukhbir Singh Badal

1. Sukhbir Singh Badal is an Indian politician who has served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab from 2009 to 2017.  

2. He is the son of Parkash Singh Badal, the former Chief Minister of Punjab who held the office for a record five times.  

3. He is a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) party and is currently the president of the same.  

4. Sukhbir was born on 9 July 1962 in Badal village of Muktsar district in Punjab.  

5. After completing his schooling in local schools, he pursued a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.  

6. Sukhbir Singh Badal entered politics in 1997 when he was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Lambi constituency of Punjab.  

7. He was appointed as the Minister of Finance, Planning and Development in the Parkash Singh Badal government in 1997.  

8. He was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab in 2009 when his father formed a government for the fifth time.  

9. As Deputy Chief Minister, Sukhbir was responsible for various portfolios, including home, power, irrigation and housing.  

10. He was instrumental in bringing the Right to Service Act to Punjab, which made it mandatory for the government to provide timely services to citizens.  

11. He also implemented the Punjab Food Security Scheme, which provided food security to the poor and needy.  

12. Sukhbir Singh Badal has also been credited with creating new employment opportunities in Punjab through various initiatives such as the Punjab Employment Generation Scheme.  

13. He has also worked towards improving the infrastructure in the state by setting up new hospitals, roads, power plants and educational institutions.  

14. Sukhbir Singh Badal has been actively involved in the rehabilitation of farmers who have been affected by natural calamities in Punjab.  

15. He is also credited with introducing a new 'Green Revolution' in Punjab, which is aimed at providing better irrigation facilities to farmers.  

16. Sukhbir Singh Badal has also been actively involved in the promotion of sports in Punjab, and has supported initiatives such as the Hockey India League and the Punjab Premier League.  

17. He is also credited with the development of the state's tourism sector, with the launch of the Punjab Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC).  

18. Sukhbir Singh Badal was re-elected as the Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab in 2012.  

19. In 2016, he was elected as the President of the SAD.  

20. In 2017, he lost the Assembly elections and resigned as Deputy Chief Minister.
